Good sportsbooks have innovative ideas and great execution. Great sportsbooks, on the other hand, have all that plus experienced individuals within their ranks. Such is the case with PowerPlay, one of the brightest stars in Canada’s sports betting industry.
Keith McDonnell, the brand’s co-founder, is the former global affiliate manager at William Hill. With experience from working for perhaps the world’s biggest bookie, McDonnell set his sights on the Canadian market. Since October 2018, PowerPlay has been available to Canadian sports betting aficionados.
How does it stack up against other brands in the country? Should you give it a chance? We believe so, but let’s take a more detailed look into the matter.
What a design this is! At first glance, we weren’t quite thrilled with seeing black, white, and red used in unison. When it comes to bookmakers and their color choices, it’s probably the most overused set of hues in the last 20 years. Keep in mind that this skepticism lasted about half a second, while the PowerPlay homepage was loading.
This is exactly how bookies should approach design. Sometimes, more is less. PowerPlay does an excellent job of prioritizing different types of content. In-site advertising is only reserved for the header, which you can control yourself if you desire to do so.
Different sports and different markets are visually separated by an excellent use of bright-red borders. Therefore, you can browse the site on any device, and you’ll still get the same stellar experience as on a state-of-the-art PC. Loading times are lightning fast, which further reinforces our impression of PowerPlay running some of the most lightweight software we’ve seen.
We also like that the majority of pages on the site have a predominantly dark grey/black background. That’s how you create a usable site.
As for the Banking section on PowerPlay.com, you’ll find everything a Canadian bettor might need. VISA, MasterCard, Neteller, EcoPayz, and Interac are just a few available options. Minimum withdrawals vary depending on the platform you’re using, though. Waiting times are minimal and it’s very easy to add or take out money from your account.
Customer support is Fantastic, with a capital F. While live chat support is not available 24/7, you can still get a response in ~12 hours if you send an email. Every answer we received was well-constructed and usable when solving the problem at hand. WhatsApp and Facebook can be also used to contact PowerPlay, which isn’t something we see very often.
PowerPlay has a wide variety of sporting events that punters can bet on. Among the covered sports are: Baseball, MLB, Soccer, EPL, Serie A, MLS, Table Tennis, Tennis, Golf, Basketball, UFC, Virtual Sports. Betting odds at PowerPlay are competitive overall. Soccer betting margin is 5.2%, tennis betting margin is 7.5%, ice hockey betting margin is 7.6%, basketball with 5.6% and so on. The overall betting margin is 6.5%. These betting margins have been calculated using odds from different events in each sport. Please note that margins may be different from a sport to another, and even from a league to other.
Unfortunately, the odds at PowerPlay are slightly below average. However, this is effectively offset by a large number of available markets. In fact, we believe that few Canadian sites can match the variety that PowerPlay providers. We would love to see them add streaming options, too.
When it comes to live betting, we can’t understate how splendid this section really is. Lines are updated with lightning speed, while special bets are abundant. Honestly, the experience is almost indistinguishable from pre-match betting.
When it comes to licensing, PowerPlay didn’t impress us. A license from the Governor-General of Curacao isn’t the strongest on the market, but can we really blame the bookie? They were only founded a less than two years ago.
Many jurisdictions have excruciatingly long approval and verification periods, so it makes sense that they only have one license. We don’t love the fact that they haven’t specified the exact security measures being used. Nevertheless, PowerPlay is a safe site. Transparency could be better, though.
PowerPlay offers a range of welcome bonuses to its new users. For example, International users (that are not from a country specifically listed below) will receive a bonus of [-].
